It’s a given fact that honey bee’s are the primary pollinator for Nuts, Fruits and Vegetables!
In California, the almond business relies 100% on the bee for pollinating a 1 Billion/Year industry, so they are very important. In past years, there was been what scientists called the “Colony Collapse Syndrome”, this stretched all over the world. Here is CA, we had a lot of colonies fail in 2000 to 2008. In 2009 they were on a huge comeback, now they found the reason, and it may be starting again. For six years, the scientists looking for the reason for the collapse could find nothing at all.
It seems a small fly, the “Apocephalus borealis” is the suspect. This fly is extremely small, much smaller than the bee itself. It seems the fly lays it’s larvae in the abdomen of the bee, the larvae grow and take over the nervous system of the bee. Zombies, is what they call the bee’s once infected. The Biologists discovered bee’s that became nocturnal, would spin in circles with no sense of direction and some cannot even stand up. Once dead, the larvae emerge from the bee and then use it for food.
In 31 surveyed hives in the SF Bay area, 3/4 of them were infected by the tiny fly. San Francisco State will employ a staff scientist to study further. The will put tiny transmitters on bees to study their patterns. At this point, they don’t how big a player this infection is but are working to determine the next course of action.
This may affect our food supply so keep up on the story! We need to bee’s folks, no bee’s no food.
