As we move toward being more self sufficient, FOOD becomes one of the most important elements.
In our climate of Northern Nevada, water is the resource of life. To aid in water conservation and to put water where the plants can use it, the technique of placing wood in the bottom of planting beds to absorb water as they decay and release that water back was developed by Sep Holzer. The idea, known as Hugelkultur, is used along with permaculture to hold water until needed and promote the food forest concept. We are using as much of those practices as practical on our homestead.
This is our first bed using that principal. 3 more beds are designed into the planting area for this spring. Enjoy the video!
